Kosovo Liberation Army ex-fighters protested in Pristina, telling the prosecution to withdraw an indictment that alleges there are thousands of fake war veterans, or face potentially violent protests.

Kosovo Liberation Army, KLA veterans from the guerrilla force’s wartime Dukagjini Zone protested on Wednesday at the Palace of Justice in Pristina against the recently-filed indictment alleging that thousands of people have been falsely registered as veterans.

The former KLA fighters from the Dukagjini Zone, where current Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj was a commander during the war, gave a ten-day ultimatum to the Kosovo prosecution to withdraw the indictment.

“If there is no move from your side, the next protest will not be peaceful,” Avdyl Mushkolaj, a representative of the Dukagjini KLA veterans, warned the prosecution.

Last week the Kosovo Special Prosecution indicted 12 members of the government’s verification commission over claims that thousands who never fought in the war have been falsely registered as ex-guerrillas, enabling them to claim benefits.
