U.S. General Tod Daniel Wolters, the United States Air Force general and commander of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa, said in his address to the U.S Senate on Tuesday, that U.S. troops are needed in Kosovo to answer to external malign threats. He also said that the U.S. Command would support the further development of the Kosovo Security Force. “U.S. presence is needed to strengthen the resistance of our partners to external malign threats,” Wolters said when asked about the KFOR mission in Kosovo. He also said the U.S. Department of State was helping to modernize armies in the region by supplying them with U.S. weapons. “The Department of Defense supports regional partners through cooperation in security and capacity building initiatives. Key to these initiatives is eliminating the dependency of armies in the region on Soviet heritage. We are using instruments of cooperation in the area of security to modernize armies in the region with U.S. origin weapons that is compliable with NATO standards,” he added. When asked specifically about the Kosovo Security Force, Wolters said: “The U.S. Command in Europe supports the development of the KSF, according to the 10-year transition plan, in full coordination with the U.S. and NATO Allied Countries. We encourage the KSF to maintain its multiethnic and professional character that responds to all citizens of Kosovo”.
