Kosovo government spokesperson and advisor to Prime Minister Isa Mustafa, Faton Abdullahu, told Radio Free Europe that the obstacles posed by Serbia are the main reason of Kosovo’s failure to join international organisations, in particular the European institutions. According to him, with such actions Serbia is violating the fundamental principles of EU membership. “Serbia’s approach is completely unacceptable. It is a dangerous approach in terms of security and peace in the region. Normalization of relations with neighbours is the main condition to speed up the process towards European integration,” Abdullahu said.

Although it was announced years ago that Kosovo would become a member of the Council of Europe, this did not happen due to Kosovo’s failure to secure enough votes, Radio Free Europe reports. Abdullahu said the reasons why Kosovo has not applied in this mechanism yet are different. “The reasons are different, but what can be said is that we have specifically good relations with the Council of Europe. I believe that in the near future we will overcome those challenges and become a member of this organisation," he said. Meanwhile, Zgjim Hyseni from Vetëvendosje Movement said that one of the reasons why Kosovo failed to join international organizations is also because Kosovo is being governed by corrupt people.
