Pristina is preparing for the Army (Vesti online)
As announced by the Kosovo Foreign Ministry in a meeting with the US Under Secretary of Defence, Evelyn Farkas, this year will be decisive for the transformation of Kosovo Security Forces in the army.
Belgrade pointed out that the formation of the Kosovo Army is contrary to the UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and it will not help improving the security of Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, or stability in the region.
Professor of the Faculty of Security Zoran Dragisic stressed that Serbia could do nothing to prevent this process; in particular Serbia could not influence the support and bilateral relations between Washington and Pristina.
“This is not good news, but also it is not a reason to panic. Armed forces are characteristic of statehood and we have armed forces that are not friendly, in the territory we consider as ours. Their formation is a strategic error for the Balkans and Kosovo, which should be a demilitarized zone. From the wider perspective, that creates serious problems (though rather political than security related) particularly, considering the fact Kosovo is not recognized by a large number of countries. First of all, with this policy of Serbia and the constellation of forces it is not realistic to expect that there may be conflicts of the armed forces of Serbia and Kosovo - says Zoran Dragisic.
