Serbia respects the uniqueness of Kosovo, but not independence (TV Most)
Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic said that Serbia respects the uniqueness of Kosovo since it is negotiating with the authorities in Pristina, but does not recognize Kosovo's independence. "In front of me is the Constitution. I know that President of Serbia is elected in Kosovo, but competences of Serbia do not extend to the whole territory of Kosovo. Serbia has recognized unique position in which Kosovo is. We recognize them since we are negotiating with them, but we did not recognize independence," said Nikolic in an interview with TV Prva.
Nikolić said that he is trying not to violate the Constitution and that Serbia will try to stick to documents that would not allow Kosovo to be counted as an independent state. "According to the Constitution, Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia. Also, according to our wish and expectations it is an integral part of Serbia," he said. When asked about the agreement that Serbia should sign when closing the negotiating chapter 35 on Kosovo with the European Union, Serbian president said that he is not afraid of the agreement, but he would like to know what is written in it, so he could comment it.
Nikolic stated that he is not competent to propose amending the Constitution, adding that it will happen. He said that the Constitution will be amended, but not because of a preamble stating that Kosovo is part of Serbia.
