Gjilan/Gnjilane breaking stereotypes about women (Zeri)
The municipality of Gjilan/Gnjilane is breaking stereotypes about women as it is the first municipality in Kosovo to elect a woman as President of the Municipal Assembly. Valentina Bunjaku-Rexhepi, President of the Gjilan/Gnjilane Municipal Assembly, said on Wednesday that this municipality is serving as a model for promoting the position of women. Bunjaku-Rexhepi talked about her political career in a debate organized by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) where women from different municipalities had the opportunity to share their experiences. She said that in the 2013 municipal elections she managed to break every stereotype about women by being one of the candidates who got the most votes Kosovo-wide. “We have two female members in the most important municipal department – the department for policies and finance. There are also another two committees that are run by female members. I can freely say that we are a success story. We are also concluding the establishment of local councils. We have asked for these councils to include more women in their decision-making processes,” she said.
