The big clean-up should begin on 8 June (Koha Ditore)
Enver Robelli in his weekly column says the outgoing prime minister Thaci is so scared of the possibility of losing 8 June elections that he has started to act and speak as if sleepwalking. He is making promises which, in Robelli’s view, are ‘gigantic lies’ pulled out of a sack full of rotten fruits.
Most recently, Thaci posted a picture of him in a field of flowers taken somewhere in Kosovo along with a caption praising Kosovo’s landscape. “But there is another terrible truth: citizens of Kosovo live in one of the most polluted environments in Europe and the government of this country undertook almost no serious step to fight this concerning development”, writes Robelli.
As a result, elections of 8 June will serve to clean up Kosovo in more ways than one, says Robelli.
This clean-up also includes clarification of relations with Serbia, he adds. The outgoing government of Kosovo is leaving behind an agreement with Belgrade which pollutes the political environment more than it solves any actual problem. “Being scared that he could be blackmailed by the international community for some corruption affair, the Kosovo delegation did not enter talks with Serbia to help Kosovo but to embellish Thaci’s image as a visionary politician”.
Robelli however does not dispute the need for Kosovo to dialogue with neighbouring countries, including Serbia, but stresses that such talks can be productive only if Kosovo is represented by politicians that defend its interests rather than their personal ones.
By polluting the environment as well as the political landscape Thaci has caused a serious setback for Kosovo. “It is final time for, as British ambassador Ian Cliff said, the Kosovo society to choose new political faces”, writes Robelli adding that translated into political language Cliff’s message means that politicians present in the scene since the end of the war should leave. “Hashim Thaci is one of them. His governance by any serious historian will be described as one fatal historic accident”, concludes Robelli.
