Djuric: UNMIK and EULEX to engage (Blic, B92)
Head of Office for Kosovo and Metohija Marko Djuric asked the UNMIK Chief Farid Zarif and EULEX Chief Gabriel Meucci to engage on Ivanovic's case.
Djuric in an official letter addressed to EULEX and UNMIK requested to enable bail for the leader of the Citizens' Initiative SDP, Oliver Ivanovic and Dragoljub Delibasic. Also, Djuric states that it would prevent human right violations and damage of Ivanovic's health.
"Without prejudice to the principle of independence of the judiciary, please urgently take measures within its jurisdiction, and use all of your formal and informal resources that are available to you, in order to respect fundamental human rights and freedoms of detainees, to prevent deterioration of Ivanovic's health, and avoid destabilization of social and political climate in Kosovo," said Djuric in a letter to Zarif and Meucci, reports the Office for Kosovo and Metohija.
Recalling the earlier memos of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, which have presented the arguments for release on bail for Ivanovic and Delibasic and guarantees presented by the Serbian Government that they will be available to EULEX by the end proceedings, Djuric said that their detention was once again extended without any legal logic, and it was a political process and a completely unique situation that requires an exceptional response.
"The judicial system in Kosovo that is under the supervision of EULEX now has the opportunity to build or to destroy its credibility," said Djuric.
Belgrade and Pristina, with the EU mediation and guarantee, he recalled, reached an agreement on the judiciary, which full implementation is yet to be expected.
Djuric emphasizes that it will be very difficult to establish the trust of the Serbian community in the justice system in Kosovo, if a solution to this case is not found, since the entire Serbian community in Kosovo and the professional public in Serbia contests the criteria, based on which custody was extended for Ivanovic and Delibasic.
"On the possible consequences of a possible drastic deterioration of Ivanovic's health, we do not dare to think," said Djuric.
