Mayor of South Mitrovica, Agim Bahtiri announced the revitalization of the bridge to the Albanian media in Kosovo that for years separates the southern and northern part of the city.
"Peace Park” which was set by the representatives of Serbs from northern Kosovo, has not been accepted by Albanians from the southern part of the city, so this issue has been discussed and in Brussels. The EU office in Pristina gave a proposal for a solution to this situation, which was accepted by both sides. The project envisages the opening of the bridge in mid-June.
Citizens of North and South Mitrovica have different interpretations about opening of this bridge. In the north there is a fear that this solution may contribute to a deterioration of the security situation and lead to new conflicts.
Adrijana Hodzić, Head of the municipal administration of North Mitrovica, believes that "Peace Park" was a good interim solution, but that the opening of the bridge should wait for better conditions, and that one should not impose solutions to citizens.
"What technically is happening on the ground is that the works are conditioned by the signing of a memorandum which contains a number of points. The signatories to the memorandum should be mayors of two municipalities, and as far as I am aware and the Ministry of Spatial Planning. There are certain challenges when it comes to the memorandum and disagreements. While the memorandum is not signed, I do not believe that work can begin on the bridge," said Hodzić.
Marko Jakšić, a member of the presidency of the Democratic Party of Serbia, says that the Brussels agreement is the greatest act of treason in the history of Serbian nation, which was signed by the government in Belgrade.
"This bridge preserved the only urban environment with a majority Serbian population, the story of the pedestrian zone opens the way for the invasion of Albanians from the southern to the northern part of the city, and means disappearance of Serbian population and from this area. Opening of pedestrian zone and the bridge is contrary to the interests of the Serbs who live in this area," said Jakšić.
The Brussels Agreement envisaged the removal of "Peace Park". The Northern Mitrovica Assembly brought a decision to turn the part of the street from Telekom's building to the Three Towers into a pedestrian zone, which is contrary to the announcement that the bridge will be opened for traffic.
