Sutanovac: Mandatory military service to divert focus from Kosovo (TV N1)

Former Serbian Minister of Defense, Dragan Sutanovac told N1 on Wednesday that the reintroduction of mandatory military service is just a media initiative aimed at diverting public attention from Kosovo as the most crucial topic.

Sutanovac added he doubts it would be realized, saying the current Defense Ministry is “lost and incapable of finishing the process of professionalization of the army.”

Sutanovac, ex-leader of the opposition Democratic Party (DS) said that instead of reintroducing mandatory service, Serbia needs to professionalize its army further, improve the living standard of the soldiers and form an active military reserve.

“They have launched a media initiative which I doubt would become reality. Such a serious decision is taken once in two hundred years. I believe that some issues are open in Serbia to divert public’s attention from the more important subjects like Kosovo is now,” Sutanovac said.
