Kosovo Assembly fails to approve parliamentary committees (Radio Kosova)

The Kosovo Assembly failed to approve 14 parliamentary committees that were proposed last week. The motion received 58 votes in favor and 32 against and it required 61 to pass. MPs from the opposition parties opposed the ways the parliamentary committees were allocated because, according to them, the main committees will be chaired by the coalition parties. Assembly Speaker, Kadri Veseli, postponed this point of the agenda for the next session.

Although the new Kosovo Assembly Speaker, Kadri Veseli, was one of the leading figures of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), he said that he will put to vote the draft law on establishment of the special court. This, according to Veseli, will be done to clear all suspicions one the KLA just war.

The Assembly of Kosovo elected Kadri Veseli as the Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, with 71 votes for, 42 against, and one abstention. 119 deputies were present at the session. The PDK proposed Veseli for Assembly Speaker and Xhavit Haliti as his deputy.

US Ambassador Tracey Ann Jacobson and European Parliament Member Ulrike Lunacek were present at the session.

Haziri: No Assembly session without agreement with PDK (Indeksonline)

Lutfi Haziri, a member of the chairmanship of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), said on Thursday that the inaugural session of the Kosovo Assembly would not resume without a prior agreement between the LDK and the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK). Haziri also said that "the post of the Prime Minister is a done deal" and that it belongs to the LDK.

Kosovo Expects to Form Army Soon (Balkan Insight)

Kosovo’s new parliament will vote to transform the security forces into an army as soon as it starts work next month, a senior official said.

"I believe that one of the first decisions of the Kosovo Assembly will be the formalisation of the armed forces of Kosovo,” Agim Ceku, Kosovo’s Security Forces Minister, told the Epoka e Re daily newspaper on Thursday.

“I strongly believe this project will be accomplished because it is a national project of high importance for the country and its citizens," Ceku said.

In the front-page editorial, the paper today writes that after the decision of the post-election coalition to give up Assembly speaker post, there are no more reasons for postponing the calling of constitutive session any longer. The session’s chairperson, Flora Brovina, should not fear announcing the continuation of the session but should, as a matter of priority, meet leaders of parliamentary groups, and set the date for the upcoming session.

Mounting pressure on PDK (Gazeta Blic)

Leader of Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and outgoing Prime Minister, Hashim Thaci, had this morning separate meetings with the Germany’s Foreign Ministry director for south-east Europe, Ernst Reichel, the US ambassador, Tracey Ann Jacobson, and President, Atifete Jahjaga. According to lajmi.net, this round of intensive meetings is expected to very soon produce concrete results regarding the need to establish new institutions.
