Moscow says Lavrov-Pompeo meeting next month in the works (ABC News, AP)

A senior Russian diplomat says Moscow is working on a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters Thursday that Moscow and Washington are discussing a possible meeting at the U.N. General Assembly in New Rork next month but that they haven't agreed on the time or agenda yet.

NATO, US warn Kosovo against move to form army (ABC News)

NATO and the United States warned Wednesday they could scale back cooperation with Kosovo's security services if the government goes ahead with plans to transform its lightly-armed security force into an army without the required constitutional changes.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he told Kosovo's leaders by telephone "that unilateral steps such as these are unhelpful." He warned that if Kosovo goes ahead as planned "NATO will have to review its level of commitment, particularly in terms of capacity-building."

EU, Kosovo Police in Major Operation Against Organized Crime (AP/ABC News)

The European Union's police mission in Kosovo launched a major operation against organized crime.

Local media reported that police arrested a governing party lawmaker in Wednesday's raids, and police also checked scores of bars and restaurants allegedly managed by criminal gangs.

Kosovo Elects New President, Opposition Protests (AP/ABC News)

Kosovo's Parliament is expected to elect Hashim Thaci, Foreign Minister and former guerrilla leader, as the next president.

Thaci, who led the fighters of Kosovo's successful separatist war against Serbia in 1998-99, believes he has the votes in the 120-seat Parliament. Kosovo declared independence in 2008, although that is rejected by Serbia.
