FOL: EULEX with a poor performance record in Kosovo (Telegrafi, Lajmi)
Head of the Kosovo-based think tank FOL, Petrit Zogaj, said today that the EU rule of law mission (EULEX) has failed in fighting corruption and organised crime in Kosovo. He said that in the seven years since being established, the mission had only taken 47 court decisions in cases of organised crime and corruption. According to FOL, EULEX’s poor performance has increased the mistrust of the people in the justice institutions. At the same time, Krenar Gashi from the Institute for Development Policy listed some of the reasons behind EULEX’s performance record. He said investigating cases of corruption is difficult for the lack of cooperation between the local and international justice authorities. Asked about the extension of EULEX mandate and the possibility of UNMIK taking on more competencies, Gashi said the worst thing that can happen in Kosovo after failure of EULEX is for another “failed mission like that of UNMIK” to make a comeback.
