Expert: Western Balkans economic union unfavourable for Kosovo (RFE)

Economy and European integration experts in Kosovo view the recent Western Balkans in Trieste, Italy as one of the most important events of the year for the region that aspires to join the EU. However, some believe that the idea to set up a Western Balkans economic union would be unfavourable for Kosovo. Safet Gerxhaliu, head of Kosovo’s Chamber of Commerce, said the summit carries an important economic, political and strategic importance but that it should not be viewed as a magic wand that will disappear Kosovo’s accumulated problems. “We cannot expect miracles from these processes if we don’t do our homework,” he said. At the same time, Avni Mazreku, European Union expert, said the EU is seeking suitable ways to integrate the Western Balkans region. However, he pointed out that for as long as Kosovo is not recognised by all EU member states, the ideas for a common regional market would be unfavourable for it as it would not be treated as an equal member.
