Citizens of Mitrovica: Division good for us, bad for Serbs living south (Radio kontakt plus)
Radio kontakt plus interviewed citizens of Mitrovica North on the division of Kosovo as possible solution. Most respondents assessed the division of Kosovo as good for the Serbs in the north, but bad for those living south of the Ibar River. Respondents also warned division could cause exodus of Serbs from the south.
“If division would happen, Albanians would not take it easy and calmly, so most probably we could expect some sort of a new exodus of Serbs living south of the Ibar River, and possibly destruction of our churches and shrines (…). I personally do not support the idea on division of Kosovo,” one of the respondents said.
Another citizen believes that division at this moment is unrealistic, adding those living in the south are more concerned if that would happen. He also questioned if those who live in central and other parts of Kosovo would have their rights respected, and it is certain they wouldn’t.
Citizens were also asked to comment on the Kosovo President Hashim Thaci’s idea to merge Presevo valley with Kosovo.
“They would ask for everything. Not only Presevo valley, they would ask for Belgrade. Who would oppose them? They are silent and watch things happening. There are 30 or 50 political parties and all they are interested is how to get in power. I am 84 years old, soon would turn 85 and it was never like this. (…) It is a shame what these who lead Serbia are doing with the state,” one of the respondents said.
“It is not good. In particular for us. But what we can do?” another citizen said, Radio kontakt plus reported.
