EU has not abandoned Western Balkans, diplomats say (N1, Beta)

The European Union is not investing strong efforts to resolve the Kosovo-Serbia problem and stimulate reforms in the Western Balkans, but it still wants to stabilize the region, the Beta news agency was told at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg.

Diplomatic sources told the news agency that the EU’s strategic goal is the security, political and economic stabilization of the Western Balkans.

The sources said that the greater involvement of other great powers in resolving the Kosovo issue is important, adding that the EU has not abandoned the region and that is reflected in Germany’s efforts to renew the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.

Beta said it was told by German sources that Berlin believes that the EU will be able to tackle the Kosovo issue next autumn and that a strong figure with a strong team and powers has to be included in the European External Action Service to deal with the Western Balkans.

The EU foreign ministers did not debate the Kosovo issue and other problems in the Western Balkans as they have done regularly in the past because, as the diplomatic sources said, they have to deal with internal issues and Brexit.
