German soldiers to remain in KFOR, government says (N1, FoNet)

Germany will keep its soldiers in Kosovo as part of KFOR for another year because the situation there is unstable, Deutsche Welle reported.

The German government took the decision to keep the Bundeswehr troops in KFOR because it feels that the potential exists for conflicts, especially in the north of Kosovo, it said.

The number of German troops will be limited to 400 instead of the current limit of 800 which still allows them to react quickly if the security situation deteriorates, the German government said in a statement, adding that “continued participation in the KFOR mission is in the interest of Germany’s security”. There are some 70 German soldiers deployed in Kosovo at present.

According to the statement, the situation in Kosovo is peaceful and stable but with a potential for conflict and escalation because of the process to normalize relations with Serbia.
