The risk of contagion in Kosovska Mitrovica increased due to landfill (Vecernje Novosti)
The risk of contagion in Kosovska Mitrovica has been increased due to illegal landfill, which is located on the outskirts of the city, and where is stored complete municipal waste, including medical.
Dr Aleksandar Ćorac said that it is difficult to say whether any kind of contagion is threatening to the citizens of Kosovska Mitrovica, but as he said ‘the risk of contagion is certainly increased.’ “This is not only about the possibility for the development of the diseases. Unsanitary, unplanned landfills are multiple sources of environmental risks,” he said.
Dr Ćorac pointed out that the solution to this problem is primarily in the planning and the development of strategies. "For several years we were trying to convince the authorities to start drafting local environmental plans, which are the cornerstone for the further strategies of development of the municipality. If we would have a better plan this would not have happened," says Ćorac.
The environment in Kosovo is in danger by a large number of Trepca industrial landfills, and the lack of collectors for wastewater treatment. From Pristina to Raska, at the area of about 300 hectares, there are 16 huge industrial landfills, which weight over 200 million tonnes.
