Thaci admits he lacks international support for legal changes for army (Koha)
Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci did not confirm that Kosovo enjoys international support, especially from the United States of America, to amend the law on the Kosovo Security Force which would give the latter the competencies of an army. Thaci told the Voice of America that the U.S. and the international community support the transformation of the KSF into an army through constitutional amendments. “I have been working for three years now to address the matter through constitutional amendments and I would very much like for this to happen. We had support from the United States of America and NATO, but it has become impossible especially after open, clear and determined statements from the Serbian List and Belgrade that it does not allow and threatens the Serbian List not to vote on the law. So now the only remaining options are for Kosovo to have no army or to move to plan B which is to transform the KSF into a modern army,” Thaci said. He added that the decision on the army is within the authority of Kosovo’s institutions and that all relevant international stakeholders are informed about the process. “We all want constitutional changes and we will work for this to happen. The process of transformation is an institutional, constitutional and legal one and it falls within the values and our Euro-Atlantic framework; therefore, I am fully confident that the international community will be understanding of the honest engagement of Kosovo’s institutions”. Thaci said the Army of Kosovo will not engage against anyone and that no one should feel threatened, “on the contrary, we will be a factor of peace, stability and good neighborly relations”. Thaci also said that these actions will not result in the end of talks with Serbia, “we will continue to work on the normalization of our relations”. “I also want to hope that this is going to be a very good message that Kosovo is consolidating its independence and sovereignty”.
