Lajcak: We owe opening of chapters to Serbia (Vecernje Novosti, Tanjug)
The fact that we have not opened even the first negotiation chapter with Serbia lends no credibility to the EU, says Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak.
We owe that not only to Serbia, but to ourselves as well, for the sake of the authenticity of the European integration process - the commissioner for enlargement talks, Johannes Hahn, also agrees with this, Lajcak was quoted as saying in Monday's issue of Vecernje Novosti ahead of a meeting of European leaders, to be held in Brussels late this month.
Noting that the EU officially opened the negotiation process with Serbia in January last year and that the decision to do so had been made in December 2013, Lajcak said that it would be good if the EU showed a little more sensitivity on the matter.
At a recent Friends of Serbia meeting in Brussels, very positive assessments were made about the steps taken by the Serbian government, and everyone - myself included - spoke about the need to open the negotiations, he added.
Asked if he is apprehensive about a "Greater Albania", Lajcak noted that there will be no new borders in the region.
