“There are no constitutional and legal foundations for referendum” (Danas)

A group of Serbian academics, politicians, public personalities and heads of the Serbian Orthodox Church Monasteries in a written statement published by Belgrade-based daily Danas warned President Vucic that “signing of legally-binding agreement on comprehensive normalization of relations with Kosovo or division of Kosovo and Metohija between Serbia and so-called Kosovo would be the most defeating act in a modern Serbian history.”

The signatories include Smilja Avramov, Matija Beckovic, Danilo Basta, Slobodan Antonic, Kosta Cavoski, Marko Jaksic, Slobodan Samardzic, Slavisa Ristic, Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) representatives and others. The gathering took place in the SOC Monastery in Slanci (near Belgrade) on 14th July, while the written statement was sent to the media yesterday. The signatories of the statement urged President Vucic “to stop hiding and fabricating in the media his activities in regard to the obligation he accepted himself,” adding “his duty is to protect his state and all its citizens, in particular seriously endangered part, Serbian holly land, Kosovo and Metohija.” They also called upon Serbian President Vucic “to stop causing and deepening internal divisions among the Serbian people by his detrimental politics and media attacks, since the Constitution of Serbia and UN Resolution 1244 give him authority to wait and prepare for the forthcoming changes in the international relations that would provide for a just solution of the Kosovo issue,” Danas daily reported.
