Strpce: Works on construction of mini-hydro plant halted, excessive use of force by police condemned (Radio KIM)
The works on construction of the mini-hydro plant in place called “Obe reke” in Strpce are halted until further notice, Radio KIM reported yesterday. This was announced following the meeting of Strpce inhabitants, investor, representatives of the local self-governance, police and judiciary.
Following the meeting, it was decided to check the documentation of Matkos-group company from Pristina, that is conducting the works.
One of the protest organizers in Strpce, Dobrivoje Stevanovic told RTV KIM inhabitants requested from the municipality to halt the works, and the municipality supported them. Strpce municipality also condemned the excessive use of Kosovo police against protestors on Friday, which left 20 people injured.
Stefanovic underlined if a decision contrary to their interest is made, people would defend their rivers, as “if rivers are taken away, the existence of people living there would make no sense.”
Meanwhile, Raska-Prizren Eparchy also strongly condemned the incident in Strpce on Friday, during which Kosovo police using batons and tear-gas injured at least 20 local residents there.
The Eparchy noted the action of the Kosovo special police unit in Strpce additionally endangers the survival of the Serbian people in this southern municipality and such reactions of the Pristina authorities must not be allowed in the future. Bishop Teodosije underlined the Church firmly stands by its people in the protection of their rights, freedom to peacefully express their opinion and protection of the natural wealth of Sara Mountain.
