Haliti: Elections are held for the sake of solutions (Tribuna)

Xhavit Haliti, deputy speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, writes that the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) and the Initiative for Kosovo (NISMA), “which were historically close to the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK)”, entered into a coalition with the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) and even before the certification of election results, they rushed to split the highest state posts between them. “Thus, the fight for power deformed the axiomatic sentence of democracy according to which elections are held for the sake of solutions. Early elections on 8 June were motivated and held with the aim of paving the way to progress, well-being, European integration, consolidation, democratization and the sovereignty of the state of Kosovo. With these elections we showed the world that the Republic of Kosovo has its borders and has control over its territory. With the actions of highest state institutions – the President and the Constitutional Court – we showed the world that we respect the law and the Constitution. The people of Kosovo made their choice on 8 June. They used their vote, the sole weapon of democracy. More than 1/3 of voters supported the PDK. Our people cast most of their votes to the PDK and LDK. The people of Kosovo gave the mandate to these two parties to find solutions. A coalition government between the two biggest parties would embody the will of voters and at the same time accelerate economic and social development and Kosovo’s international integration. I believe that the first government alliance between the PDK and LDK was successful and that it helped Kosovo’s development. It did not derive from election results but rather served to solve problems of the time. In order to avoid a political stalemate or new elections, the two most voted parties need to find solutions by jointly governing Kosovo”.
