Professor of International Relations at the University of Manchester Oliver Richmond said that the self-proclaimed Kosovo is a failure of the policy of international interventionism, while the NATO intervention is inexplicable from the standpoint of respecting the structure of the territorial sovereignty of the state, writes today Belgrade based daily Blic.
Richmond points out that the state cannot exist for itself, but must be embedded in the regional order of consent, consensus and legitimacy, because otherwise there will be contradictions regarding the issue of identity and understanding of history.
In a certain way, the irony is that Albanians seek to return to the prescription of old geopolitics about the creation of national states, instead of achieving regional alignment. However, when you look at the global environment and what is offered on the market of internationally recognized formations, only the state provides everlasting rights and status to the global community – said Richmond in an interview with Politika.
Richmond pointed out that a similar model was applied in resolving the issue of Kosovo, as well as in the case of other conflicts arising from the process of the disintegration of Yugoslavia.
– With all diplomacy, peace talks and peacekeeping, the end result was the endeavour to resolve the conflicts by relying on states – bearers of new political and legislative solutions, but without an economic component – said Richmond and said that such a concept was doomed to failure.
