The decision to again delay opening accession talks with Albania and North Macedonia is not only a betrayal but a mistake – as Europe’s own security depends on a stable southeast.
The decision of the European foreign ministers’ meeting to again delay the start of EU membership negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia on June 18 was disappointing but hardly a surprise.
No one who has followed the discussions within the EU, and especially the rhetoric coming from France and The Netherlands, expected either Skopje or Tirana to receive a green light to begin formal membership talks.
