After many Serbs fled their homes in the violent aftermath of the Kosovo war in 1999, some villages in the country are now almost completely deserted, with poor economic conditions deterring most people from returning.

Walking along an overgrown path through Zhakova/Zakovo, a small village nestled in the pastoral landscape of western Kosovo, few sights recall the life that this settlement had before the war.

The village lanes no longer exist, trees have been cut down and houses have been totally destroyed. A flock of birds flies over the foundations of homes that were never built, the lively birdsong contrasting with the silent desolation below.
