Pristina mayor, Shpend Ahmeti, stated in a press conference that the level of sulfur in the heating fuel used at schools, is 60 times higher that it is supposed to be. Therefore the Municipality of Pristina has decided to shut down 43 schools, until the Health Institute decides if the fuel is dangerous or not.

“Following media reports on the level of sulfur in the fuel that is used for heating in Pristina schools, the Municipality of Pristina has ordered tests at three different schools. We have received the results today, and they show that the level of sulfur at some schools was 70 times higher than normal. Therefore, we have made the decision to interrupt learning process at schools which use fuel for heating. Also, we have sent a letter to the Institute for Public Health, to give us a risk assessment on this level of sulfur.

We are at the same time developing a detailed plan for analyses at each school, in order for the learning process not to be interrupted longer than required.

This is only a preventive measure in order to save the health of the children and to assure that these schools are safe.” Said Ahmeti.
