Construction on the Decan – Plave road is ongoing according to plan despite remarks and pressure from different actors about the special protective zone around Decan Monastery, the news website reports. EU heads of missions issued a joint media statement recently noting that “while the EU recognizes the value of roads that link communities, applicable procedures must be followed. Prior to any activity affecting a Special Protective Zone, the Implementation and Monitoring Council (IMC) must be consulted and its decisions be fully respected, in the interest of safeguarding religious and cultural heritage and upholding the rule of law in line with Kosovo’s international commitments. The EU recalls Kosovo’s previous commitment not to commence work on the road until the bypass route is fully planned and funded and urges that this commitment will be upheld”. Father Sava Janjic had tried to stop the project arguing that construction was done even within the special protective zone. United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres had also expressed concern over the matter and called on local authorities to respect the law and decisions that prohibit construction in the zone. Meanwhile, Kosovo’s Deputy Minister for Infrastructure, Rexhep Kadriu, told the news website today that construction is going according to plan and that the road segment will soon be finished. Kadriu also said that construction is being done outside the special zone and that the Ministry maintains regular contact with the embassies and the Orthodox Church. “We are negotiating with the embassies and the Orthodox Church and we will resolve the problem of the special protective zone. Decan Mayor Bashkim Ramosaj too told Lajmi that work has not stopped and that it does not include the special zone. Ramosaj said they will not interfere in the zone before getting a permit from Decan Monastery and the Implementation and Monitoring Council.
