Kosovo President, Hashim Thaci, is alone with his initiative for border adjustments between Kosovo and Serbia as he lacks supports from the ruling parties and the opposition. Thaci needs the support of political parties because an eventual agreement between him and Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, would have to be adopted in parliament. The United Kingdom and Germany have already rejected ideas for exchange of territories or border changes in the Balkans. Avdullah Hoti, head of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) parliamentary group, said the President sent a bad message for the country with his initiative. He further argued that there is coordination in statements by certain people in Pristina and Belgrade that promote the idea of exchanging territories. The Vetevendosje Movement too said it would under no circumstance support Thaci’s initiative. Vetevendosje MP Arberie Nagavci said Thaci violated the Constitution of Kosovo when he talked about exchanging territories or border changes. “In addition to statements by opposition parties and even some individuals from the ruling parties, recently there was a statement by Chancellor Merkel and EU member states making it clear that changing borders in the Balkans would result in new conflicts and that this is completely unacceptable. We believe this is a sign for Thaci to stop making such statements and not even think in this direction,” Nagavci said.
