Janusz Bugajski, a Balkans analyst, told Deutsche Welle that Washington and Brussels want to see if Pristina and Belgrade are able to reach a final agreement on their own.

Why are we dealing with rumors and conspiracy theories? Why isn’t Washington making a clear statement?

August is the best month for rumors, but sometimes in the Balkans rumors take on an unpredicted direction and people act based on rumors. It seems that the U.S. are using the tactic of leaving Belgrade and Pristina free to talk, to see if the two governments can reach a bilateral agreement. The agreement between Macedonia and Greece could have provided an impetus to such an approach.

One of the rumors is that the U.S. have changed partners in the Balkans. What do you think?

Washington has not changed its partners, but wants to see clear results and not regional conflicts being delayed for years and without a solution. The strategic objective has not changed, and that is that all Western Balkans countries should become part of EU and NATO, but some of the tactics and approaches can be improved.
