Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati said today in Tirana that Serbia’s policy vis-à-vis Kosovo “has a 19th century rhetoric which does not suit present-day discussions focused on reconciliation and the normalization of relations”. During a conference titled “Serbs and Albanians”, Bushati said: “Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic has said that Kosovo is the heart of Serbia and that Albanians are living outside their homeland. This is 19th century rhetoric … Relations between Albanians and Serbs have an elephant in the room and that is Kosovo, and its representatives speak on its behalf, but our position is clear: the process of normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia cannot be replaced by good relations between Albania and Serbia, the latter can only complement the first”. Bushati also said that on relations between Tirana and Belgrade “dialogue must be held on honest basis. We have many common points with Serbia and there is a tendency to overcome stereotypes. Relations with Serbia are improving. Our countries must overcome the wounds of the past and there are signs that this is happening”.
