On the twentieth anniversary of the Recak massacre, Kosovo leaders have been paying tribute to the 45 Albanian civilians killed by Serbian forces. Prime Minister of Kosovo Ramush Haradinaj said the event marked a turning point in Kosovo’s fight for freedom. “Two decades ago, a vicious act shook the feelings of democratic world and mobilized the West to forcefully stop extermination of an entire people. Recak massacre, evidence of genocidal crime in Kosovo, marked a turning point in our efforts for freedom and independence,” Haradinaj wrote on Facebook. President Hashim Thaci said Recak is a symbol of sacrifice and martyrdom. “After the genocide committed by Serb forces in Recak, the entire democratic world stood up and put in motion international diplomacy,” Thaci wrote. In a commemoration event, Kosovo Assembly President Kadri Veseli said Recak is a synonym of freedom and independence of Kosovo. Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) leader Isa Mustafa and Vetevendosje’s Albin Kurti also paid their respects to the victims killed in Recak twenty years ago. Kurti said justice has not yet been served. “So Serb police officer or military official was tried or convicted on this unparalleled crime,” he said.
