Serbian Assembly Committee for Kosovo and Metohija Chairperson Milovan Drecun thinks taxes on goods from central Serbia will be abolished, Tanjug news agency reported.

Drecun added that Kosovo Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj now tries to act in line with USA wishes, but at the same time “avoid the embarrassment.”

Asked if Ramush Haradinaj is that strong to resist requests by European and world officials saying taxes will be lifted once Belgrade recognizes Kosovo, Drecun replied “of course he is not” adding that Haradinaj knows where the limit is, but tries to gain as much as he can now, in the phase of a preparation for possible elections in Kosovo and Metohija.

“He wants to show to the more radical constituencies that he is strong, that even Americans have no influence over him, and he is afraid of nobody (…). However, he reached the limit, and would need to act as USA consider it should be, so he is now looking for a way out from that situation, in order to avoid the embarrassment. I think taxes will be abolished,” Drecun said.

Asked to comment on the statement of Haradinaj’s Cabinet Chief, Avni Arifi who said Pristina could suspend taxes on the goods from Serbia temporarily, Drecun replied that temporarily in this context means as long as the talks are ongoing and a possible solution is reached, adding it is important taxes are lifted, and how Pristina wishes to justify itself before its public, it is their own matter.

He noted the role of the USA and their wish that the talks between Belgrade and Pristina continue is of crucial importance. Drecun also said Serbia wishes to reach a solution, make an agreement with Albanians on how the two peoples would live in the future and what would be the status of the Serbian southern province.
