Not us – crime and corruption are winning the battle and EULEX (Gazeta Blic)
Gazeta Blic’s editor-in-chief, Astrit Gashi, in an opinion piece says that organised crime and corruption in Kosovo are winning their final battle, that with EULEX which, until very recently, was the only hope for battling them. Unfortunately, remarks Gashi, the battle against EULEX is being won, not by the citizens of Kosovo but by organised crime and corruption. “EULEX was the only threat that the organised crime and corruption, that political and economic mafia in Kosovo, was afraid of”, says Gashi. “From the files and things that were revealed today, it seems very likely that a part of the wealth obtained on the back of this country’s future, has also been paid to corrupt and buyoff officials of this mission”. He hails the media and journalists that opened the topic of corruption in EULEX and to the mission’s former prosecutor, Maria Bamieh, for speaking out. “We allowed, dear friends, Kosovo to become a western movie where there are no heroes”, adds Gashi. While the issues that have been raised need to be investigated through and through, Gashi claims that the only thieves would rejoice if the EU mission was to close down.
