The North does not want the election trap (Vecernje Novosti)
Representatives of the four municipalities in Kosovo have frozen the campaign because of the decisions of the Central Election Commission. Possible boycott if the coat of arms of Kosovo is not removed and if the composition of the Board is not changed.
On the first day of official campaigning for early parliamentary elections in Kosovo, it became unclear whether the Serbs in the north of the province will participate in them.
Political representatives of the four northern municipalities have frozen yesterday all electoral activities until the Central Election Commission responds positively to their requests about removing symbols of unrecognized state from the ballot.
The leaders of the northern Serbs claim also that they were discriminated against because proportionate participation was not allowed in the voting committees south of the Ibër/Ibar River. They informed all international institutions in Kosovo about their decision and demands:
- CEC's decisions violate the law and minority rights. They are made against the ethnic composition of the population. If Albanians have a right to be in the voting committees in the north, we demand and that Serbs are allowed to be present in the voting committees in municipalities in the southern part of Kosovo and Metohija – announced the leaders of the four municipalities.
They are demanding the removal of the signs and symbols of statehood from the ballot, given the European standard of a ballot with Election Commission symbol only.
- Serbs in northern Kosovo want to take their fate into their own hands, they want to participate in the elections, but what CEC is doing is an example of discrimination and racism. If our requirements are not met, we will be forced to, in consultation with people, to reconsider the decision on participation in the elections - concluded a statement.
Goran Rakic, the mayor of the northern Mitrovica, confirms to Novosti:
- We will reconsider the final decision on participation in elections when we see further moves of the CEC. They engaged Albanians in voting boards in the north, and there are no Serbs in the boards of the South.
Otherwise, the Serbian List has officially launched a campaign rally in Gracanica. Branimir Stojanovic, head of the list, said that he expects at the promotional events and officials of the Serbian state.
Ksenija Bozovic from SDP-Oliver Ivanovic believes that their coalition campaign will be the same and the south and north of the Ibër/Ibar River:
- Our goal is the same: Serbian voice to be heard and in Pristina. I expect the state's appeal to voters in Kosovo, as well as IDPs to vote in this election.
