UN provided $ 1.8 million for the flooded areas (Blic)
The head of the UN Office in Serbia, Irena Vojackova Sollorano announced that UN will give $ 1.8 million for the compensation of the consequences of the floods. “From the beginning, the UN helped the Serbian government and the Red Cross in providing aid, and now we mobilize our own resources and provide expert support,” said Vojackova Sollorano to the reporters in Belgrade.
According to her, the money was provided by the Central Emergency Fund (CERF) of the UN, and it is the first part of the assistance. Vojackova Sollorano pointed out that all UN agencies in Serbia were included. They together sent a request for assistance to the Central Emergency Fund, based on the report of an international team of experts.
She added that the UN will provide more resources but that prior to that is necessary to prepare a report on the damage that will be done in cooperation with the EU and the World Bank.
Director of the Office for Reconstruction and aid for the flooded regions, Marko Blagojevic thanked the United Nations, and pointed out that UN was among the first to respond to disaster that happened in Serbia. “It is good that in a situation such as this, we have partners in all parts of the world on which we can rely. Serbia is not a deserted island, it is part of a large family,” Blagojevic said.
