If Nikolic is serious , no Serbia in the EU (Blic)
If a platform of the Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic becomes a document over which Belgrade would like to negotiate with Pristina and the EU, Serbia would find itself in a serious trouble.
This was said unofficially to Blic by sources from the European Commission in Brussels, who also stressed that EC did not receive Nikolic’s platform, thus they can only comment it based on media reports.
They explained that the process of European integration of Serbia could be jeopardized if Belgrade would request to negotiate over the status of Kosovo, treating it as the autonomous province, requesting that Serbian laws are used in northern Kosovo and that Association/Community of Serb municipalities becomes ‘province within the province of Kosovo’. Such request would be in contradiction with the Brussels Agreement, whose implementation would be abolished in that case, along with the negotiation Framework on Serbia’s accession to the EU.
However, on the other side, sources in the EC highlighted that Nikolic’s document, even if adopted by the government and the parliament, would not jeopardize relations between the EU and Serbia, if it remains a dead letter on the paper. To that end, they explained that Serbian parliament has so far adopted various resolutions and declarations on Kosovo, and if Nikolic’s document is only of a declaratory nature without practical use, it won’t be a problem for Brussels. In any case, in the EC unofficially say that it is up to political leadership in Belgrade to take the stand over the platform, and first of all, to make it public, after what more details would be known.
Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic yesterday reflected, for the first time, on platform and said that it is about a serious and extensive document which will be discussed by the state leadership.
