Police arrest Vetevendosje MPs Haxhiu and Topalli (media)
The news websites reported earlier in the day that the Kosovo Police arrested Vetevendosje MP Albulena Haxhiu wanted for her role in the releasing of teargas at the Kosovo Assembly chamber. Haxhiu is reported to have been arrested in Pristina. In the afternoon, the media reported that another Vetevendosje MP, Faton Topalli, also wanted by the police, was arrested inside the premises of the Kosovo Assembly. In a Facebook post, Topalli said he was inside the Assembly and was not being allowed by the police to leave. In a communiqué following Haxhiu’s arrest, the Vetevendosje Movement said: “Kosovo Assembly MP Albulena Haxhiu was arrested today on her way to a meeting in Gjilan. The criminal government, consisting of the PDK, LDK and the Serbian List, is using every mean to shut down the opposition in order to implement Serbia’s projects in Kosovo. The actions of the opposition MPs in the Kosovo Assembly are in the service of protecting the country’s sovereignty. The united opposition will not stop until the agreements of 25-26 August are not withdrawn. If the Kosovo Government lacks the courage to withdraw these agreements, there should be a referendum and the people of Kosovo should decide. If the government lacks the courage to organize a referendum, the country should go to early elections as soon as possible,” the communiqué notes. The Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) has called for an end to, as it said, persecution of MPs following the arrest of Haxhiu. “This is a serious blow to the MPs’ authority,” said AAK in a statement. Initiative for Kosovo (NISMA) has also issued a statement condemning the arrest of opposition representatives and demanding their immediate release. Meanwhile, the Kosovo Police spokesman Baki Kelani confirmed Haxhiu’s arrest. Kelani said the arrest was made based on a warrant that was issued several weeks ago.
