Kosovo to be dropped from the Constitution? (Tanjug,Vesti)

The Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić has announced amendment of the Constitution in next two to three years as the result of the general social consensus. He denied that it will be carried out because of Kosovo what, as he said, “many would welcome on knife”.

“We’ll have to amend the Constitution because of the judiciary and accession to the EU, chapters 23 and 24, along with the number of MPs and many other things,” said Vucic to RTS.

The Constitution was adopted in 2006, when Vojislav Koštunica was the prime minister, and its preamble reads that Kosovo and Metohija is integral part of the territory of Serbia and that such status of the province obliges to certain duties when it comes to state bodies.

Part of opposition that defends the Constitution argues that intention to drop out Kosovo from the highest legal act of the state is the exact reason for announcing amendment of the act, which is the last barrier to recognition of secession of the southern province.

“Pressure for amendment of the Constitution is coming from abroad, mainly from EU and the US, and they have to do with Kosovo the most. As a matter of fact, they are actually interested only for Kosovo, and in order to cover it up they are mentioning judicial reforms, reduction of the number of MPs etc,” said chairperson of the Statehood Movement of Serbia Slobodan Samardžić to Vesti.

“Not a single state has amended its constitution due to European integrations, they did so only after they signed the accession agreement, in case that the constitution was not in harmony with the European laws. The explanation that Serbia will amend its Constitution because of the judicial system, serves only as an excuse for changing the line which refers to the status of Kosovo in Serbian Constitution,” explained Samardzic.
