The European Union’s biggest foreign mission has been accused of using its powers to try to silence a whistleblower who claims to have uncovered evidence of possible corruption. Eulex, the foreign mission in Kosovo, is being taken to an employment tribunal by the London-based lawyer Maria Bamieh.

Former EULEX prosecutor and whistleblower Maria Bamieh has been threatened with a lawsuit by EULEX lawyers if she disclosed any information regarding her own lawsuit against her former employer. EULEX has addressed the employment tribunal in London asking for full confidentiality in the process. This would prevent the media from reporting on aspects of the case despite the huge publicity it has attracted worldwide.

Former prosecutor Maria Bamieh said Brussels’ report on the handling of her allegations of corruption within the EU’s Kosovo rule-of-law mission did not prove there was no cover-up.

Two weeks after a report was published concluding that the EU rule-of-law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) had reacted appropriately to corruption claims within its ranks, the prosecutor who unearthed the claims described the document as a disappointment.

EULEX Prosecutor Maria Bamieh, which publicly spoke about corruption and violation of the investigation rules by EULEX judges and prosecutors in Kosovo, claims that Fernando Gentilini, an associate of former EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, has to bear responsibility for "chaos" in the EU mission in Kosovo, was stated on the Brussels-based portal Euobserver. Together with Catherine Ashton, Gentilini was chief mediator, on behalf of the EU, in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue.
