TI warns of failing corruption fight in the Western Balkans (Klan Kosova)

The fight against corruption in the Western Balkans and Turkey is failing, putting European Union accession at risk, highlights Transparency International in its latest report. Political elites have too much power and there are limited ways to hold the corrupt to account, the report further stated. The new report titled National Integrity Systems in the Western Balkans and Turkey: Priorities for Reform compares the findings of seven National Integrity System assessments implemented by Transparency International chapters and partners in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey. It looks at how fit-for-purpose are the institutions in these countries for fighting corruption. With regards to Kosovo, the report states that the problem is the institutional overlap in fighting and preventing corruption which causes confusion amongst citizens. Furthermore, the number of corruption-related cases brought to justice is small and on the decline. “In Kosovo, corruption is considered a major problem alongside the poor economy and unemployment,” said Visar Sutaj from the Kosovo Democratic Institute, local partner to Transparency International.
