Thaci: Strategy treats Kosovo as integral part of EU enlargement plans (media)
President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, said that the enlargement strategy adopted by the European Commission yesterday represents an effort on the part of the EU to increase commitment to the Western Balkans and encourage reforms. He also said the strategy treats Kosovo as an integral part of EU enlargement plans. “However, for known political reasons, unfortunately, this document has not managed to preset a comprehensive and equal accession perspective for the whole countries in the region. In particular, this strategy has failed to offer clarity on Kosovo’s EU membership,” Thaci wrote on Facebook. He said this was an “unjust” approach towards Kosovo which comes as a result of five EU member states not recognising its independence. “Kosovo will not drown in despair though. We need to utilize the full potential of this strategy to advance our position towards membership, to implement necessary European reforms and conclude EU-facilitated dialogue with Serbia,” Thaci wrote. He noted that Kosovo needs to “urgently” overcome its isolation by ratifying the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro and work further on removing all political barriers to achieve Euro-Atlantic integration.
