On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the USAID Property Rights Programme launched a media campaign on public awareness for women’s property rights. The United States Ambassador, Greg Delawie, said that less than 19% of women in Kosovo own property, while an even smaller percentage has access to heritage. He added that exclusion of women from the right to heritage is an economic loss for Kosovo. Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga, said that the right to property is a universal right and it is guaranteed to everyone. Meanwhile Justice Minister Hajredin Kuci said that property rights is a pillar of the rule of law and an important factor for Kosovo’s economic development, the regulation of which is a sensitive issue that affects every citizen of Kosovo. He said that the promotion of equality in inheritance as a fundamental human right is the beginning to change the patriarchal inheritance approach. Speaking about the role and importance of women in the family, Kuci said, “The time has come to strengthen them for the benefit of our welfare, considering that equal right to inherit strengthens our families.”
