“Spain is grateful to the Government of Serbia because it did not bring up that issue, as the President Aleksandar Vucic already explained,” stated Spanish Ambassador to Serbia, Miguel Fuertes Suarez.

The Spanish Ambassador made these remarks while commenting the information that Belgrade, following the plea of his country, postponed sending the letter to Brussels, asking for further explanation on the EU stance that Kosovo and Catalonia are incomparable, daily writes further.

Therefore, Serbian Prime Minster, Ana Brnabic did not take the letter to Brussels, where she is paying a two-day visit, however she spoke about events in Spain at the EU Headquarters.

Brnabic underlined that Serbia firmly remains on the principle of respecting the international law and supports territorial integrity and sovereignty of Spain, despite that some other countries did not have the same stance in the case of illegal and unilateral self-declaration of the independence of the southern Serbian province, Politika reported.

Meanwhile, Novosti daily reported that Brnabic during the meeting with Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, said that it is of significant importance to highlight that the European Commission is and must be status neutral. That is one of the pillars of Serbia’s European integration, adding that the statement of the European Commission spokesperson on Catalonia case “was unfortunate” and came at inconvenient times, when the internal dialogue on Kosovo is launched.

She also highlighted that Serbia fully agrees with the European Commission on everything that concerns Spain. Johannes Hahn said he understands how this issue is sensitive to Serbia.

“It is good and necessary to talk about that. I hope that we would be able to resolve that issue. Now, it is important to turn toward the future,” he said and commended very brave initiative of the President Vucic to initiate internal dialogue on Kosovo, Novosti reported.
