Albin Kurti trump card of great powers? (Vecernje Novosti)
The rhetoric used by Self-determination MP, Albin Kurti on the unification of Kosovo and Albania, although not new has specific significance at this moment not only because of the movement’s ascent, but also of the splice of great powers’ interests, whose trump card he could be, Serbian daily Vecenje Novosti writes today.
According to Stevan Gajic, from the Institute of European Studies, there are indicators that an idea of Kosovo division is no longer that much repellent to the USA, striving that solution to the conflict in Syria is its “parcelling”. That is why, it goes in their favour if a similar scenario would occur in Kosovo first.
Although Kurti is against division of Kosovo, seeking its unification with Albania, Gajic believes he probably had heard information related to the complaisance on division matter or exchange of territories, therefore he is additionally strengthening his rhetoric.
Reminding that unification with Albania, was the original idea of the Self-determination Movement, analyst Dusan Janjic said that one must be careful about it, as the same messages can be heard from the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, while Albanian President, Ilir Meta is interested in the south of central Serbia and is paying visits to it.
“At the same time, Tirana threatens to Brussels that Kosovo and Albania can unify, if both are denied Europe perspective. Kurti could get indirect USA support as it goes in their favour because of the resolution of issue in Syria, and in another hand, the principles of the Self-determination related to the rights of ethnic communities go in favour to Russia as well because of Crimea,” Janjic said.
He also pointed out, that Kurti’s rhetoric, whose main aim is to get into power, could cause destabilization of Kosovo and elections, but lead to extremist terrorism, even armed conflicts, Vecernje Novosti reported.
Serbs can request same
Chair of the Serbian Assembly Committee for Kosovo and Metohija, Milovan Drecun said to Vecernje Novosti, one could expect anything from Kurti, but it is unusual that national minority organizes referendum, and if such right would be given to Albanians, than Serbs where they make minority could request the same.
“You cannot over the night turn Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija into citizens of another state. What Kurti said only proves that the idea of “Great Albania” is not dead. Thaci and Haradinaj think the same as Kurti, but do not dare to tell it publicly because of the international community.” Drecun said, Vecernje Novosti reported.
