Kosovo’s Minister for European Integration, Bekim Çollaku, said he expects good news from today’s meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) regarding the visa liberalisation process for Kosovo. “I think everyone is aware of what are the requirements of EU institutions, including those of the European Parliament, but since this voting is not final, I hope and expect the MEPs to express their support for this stage. This would allow the process to move forward,” said Çollaku. He said however that LIBE’s vote today is not the final decision on whether visa regime would be lifted for the people of Kosovo. “Once the procedures within the European Parliament are finished, the European Council member states will have to approve the European Commission’s proposal for visa liberalisation,” explained Çollaku. He said the European Commission has urged Kosovo to make efforts to finalise the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro before being granted visa-free travel and that this is exactly what the government of Kosovo has done. “Despite the fact that the agreement has not yet been ratified, this fact should not necessarily be an obstacle to today’s vote,” he added.
