Kosovo lacks independence because Kosovars don’t want it (Koha Ditore)
The paper’s Brussels-based correspondent writes today in an opinion piece that it is a major mistake that Kosovars, as a sign of respect to those who helped us become independent, leave their fate in the hands of foreign embassies, even after eight years of independence. “Britain’s exit from the EU, the risk that Donald Trump might become President of America, and Turkey’s pro-Russian approach, are just a few signs that Kosovo cannot expect that others will have the energy, patience and desire to manage Kosovo’s affairs. Therefore it is time for politicians in Kosovo to have more unity,” Palokaj writes. He further argues that waiting for someone to solve the problems of Kosovo, has created a culture of dependence rather than independence. “Like if Kosovars don’t want their independence. The citizens believe that they, namely the EU and America, will solve all their problems. So in Kosovo, even after eight years of independence, foreigners are expected to play the role of arbiter rather than being just diplomats representing their countries. Now it is expected from foreigners to say that the agreement on border-demarcation with Montenegro is in Kosovo’s best interest. But the fact is that this does not concern their territory but the territory of Kosovo and Montenegro. And, under normal circumstances, they shouldn’t get involved,” Palokaj writes.
