In the United Nations Global Open Day on Women, Peace and Security, UN WOMEN organized a conference on “Women’s Political Participation in Kosovo”.

UNMIK chief in Kosovo, Zahir Tanin, assessed that women’s participation in politics is a condition to defeat gender inequality and develop democracy. According to him, it is a success that this year, 1/3 of women in the Assembly are elected without quotas system, however, the government and political parties are not giving room to women, and this is proved by the minimum number of ministers and mayoral candidates.

Kosovo Assembly Deputy president, Xhavit Haliti, who spoke on behalf of the Assembly President Kadri Veseli, who could not be present due to his agenda, said Kosovo society has prospered on the matter. According to him, the complaint that institutions do not offer space is not valid, as political war is open and equal for everyone.

The UN WOMEN Director for Kosovo, Flora Macula, informed that they are working on a joint program with all institutions aiming increase of transitional justice and creating a strong society. She assessed that quota is not assuring representation of women on decision making and this is shown in the composition of the government.

Kosovo Assembly MP from Vetevendosje Movement, Aida Derguti spoke about the votes for the MPs.  “From one mandate to the other, I have tripled votes due to my work and not because of promotion in the campaign, therefore engagement of women in politics should be long, in the field and not only during the last month, before the elections,” Derguti said.
