Municipal Assembly in Decan/Decane held an extraordinary session to discuss the decision of the Constitutional Court to give ownership to the Orthodox Monastery of a land that is being disputed by two socially-owned enterprises and the local authorities.

Members of the municipal assembly called on central-level institutions to get engaged in finding a solution that would be acceptable for all parties involved. They suggested representatives of the Monastery and local and central institutions sit down and discuss a solution to the problem they say hampers the municipality’s development.

Decan/Decane Mayor Bashkim Ramosaj said the problem with the property in question dates back to 1992 when the Albanian workers at the socially-owned enterprise that occupied the said land were expelled from work and in 1997 this property was given to the Orthodox Monastery by the Serbian government.

“The property dispute began after the war when workers were not able to return to their company and the District Court in Decan at the time decided that this property belongs to workers. The case however went further with the Monastery sending it to the Constitutional Court which in 2016 decided to give this property to the Monastery not the municipality”, Ramosaj said adding that he considers the Constitutional Court ruling to be “unacceptable”.
