Little economy, a lot of talk (Koha Ditore)

Lumir Abdixhiku says he was relieved that Kosovo Post and Telecom was not privatized because if it did, it would be one of the ugliest political acts. Although calling off the PTK privatisation for the second time will undoubtedly carry consequences for the country, adds Abdixhiku, the fact of the matter is that the sale of one of the biggest assets cannot be carried out by corrupt people that “devalue and destroy everything they touch”.

Four years ago, he remarks, things were different and PTK’s worth was much bigger. What happened since then is that “we found a ‘sales agent’ who took the asset, prevented any maintenance, chose a market of scrap metal to find a buyer and got back to us – four years later – with a ‘fake’ buyer”. By this time, PTK was no longer valuable.

What should happen from now on, suggests Abdixhiku, is to hold everyone involved in the two failed privatization bids responsible. Then, give the PTK to a company to temporary manage it and restructure it and choose a minimum price under which it would not sell the assets. Only then would the company be ready to be sold.

He notes however that these steps cannot be undertaken by the current government which has no ideas and no will for economy and “the sooner this governing groups goes away, the sooner economic development of the country will begin”.
